Testing that Reaches the World

EN 61000-4-3 (Immunity)

EN 61000-4-3 establishes test methods for evaluating the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment to radiated radio-frequency electromagnetic fields. The standard is used to determine how equipment performs when exposed to RF energy that may be generated by radio transmitters, wireless communications equipment, and other electromagnetic sources.

Clark Testing provides EN 61000-4-3 radiated RF immunity testing for manufacturers and engineering organizations supporting EMC compliance, product qualification, and design validation programs.

EN 61000-4-3 Immunity Testing

Electronic equipment can be exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields throughout its operating environment. These fields may originate from portable radios, wireless devices, communications systems, broadcast transmitters, and other RF sources.

EN 61000-4-3 provides standardized procedures for exposing equipment to controlled electromagnetic fields and evaluating its ability to operate as intended.

Testing may include:

  • Radiated RF immunity testing
  • Controlled electromagnetic field exposure
  • Frequency sweeps across applicable test ranges
  • Multiple equipment orientations
  • Functional monitoring during exposure
  • Performance evaluation during testing
  • Post-test functional verification

The applicable frequency range, field strength, modulation, exposure conditions, and performance criteria depend on the equipment and qualification requirements.

Radiated RF Immunity Testing

During radiated immunity testing, the equipment under test is exposed to controlled RF electromagnetic fields while operating in defined modes.

The equipment can be monitored throughout the test to identify responses such as:

  • Temporary loss of functionality
  • Unintended resets
  • Communication errors
  • Control or display disturbances
  • Performance degradation
  • Changes in measured output
  • Failure to operate as intended

Testing helps determine whether equipment has sufficient immunity to RF environments it may encounter during normal operation.

EN 61000-4-3 Test Configuration

Radiated RF immunity testing requires a controlled test environment and appropriate RF generation, amplification, antenna, field-monitoring, and measurement equipment.

The equipment under test is configured and operated according to the applicable test plan. Testing may be performed from multiple orientations so that different sides of the equipment are exposed to the electromagnetic field.

Clark can work with customers to establish the appropriate equipment configuration, operating modes, monitoring methods, test levels, and acceptance criteria before testing begins.

EMC Immunity and Equipment Qualification

EN 61000-4-3 is frequently one component of a broader EMC immunity qualification program.

Clark Testing supports EMC/EMI programs that may include:

  • Radiated RF immunity
  • Conducted RF immunity
  • Electrostatic discharge
  • Electrical fast transient/burst immunity
  • Surge immunity
  • Power-frequency magnetic field immunity
  • Voltage dips and interruptions
  • Conducted and radiated emissions

Coordinating these requirements as part of a broader EMC program can help manufacturers efficiently evaluate equipment against applicable product, industry, and customer requirements.
